DIRECTIONS (for some useful links please see
bottom of page)
When locating the Khyber Mount Guest House, it is worth bearing in mind that it
looks directly across the river and harbour to the abbey: it is one block south
from the Captain Cook monument and the famous Whale Jawbones. Previous visitors
to Whitby will probably already be aware of these sites on the West Cliff as they
are but two of many reminders of Whitby's long and fascinating history
Approach from Scarborough direction
On approaching the centre of town, follow the road down and cross the New Bridge
over the river. (If you look right from the New Bridge, you will see the Old Bridge
in the distance.) At the traffic lights, continue straight on down the hill (named
Prospect Hill and Downdinner Hill) to the small roundabout at the bottom and turn
left up Chubb Hill Road. At the top there is a roundabout where you should take
the second exit left. Almost immediately, take the first road right (Crescent Avenue)
and follow it round till it emerges in Royal Crescent. Turn right here so that you
emerge at a T junction on the sea front. Turn right again and follow the road round
a right-angle turn (past the Whalebones and with the Royal Hotel on your right).
As the road turns 90 degrees again at the next corner, you will see the Khyber Mount
Guest House on the corner on your left.
Approach from the west
Most visitors approach Whitby from the west, either from Pickering (A169) to the
southwest or from Guisborough (A171) to the northwest. These roads converge just
a mile outside Whitby.
Take the 2nd exit from the roundabout (near the Park and Ride carpark). Turn left
after the Spar shop and garage along Love Lane. Turn right at the end of Love Lane
and then take the first left along White Point Road. Follow this Promenade until
it turns at 90 degrees past the Royal Hotel and the Whalebones. As the road turns
90 degrees again at the next corner, you will see the Khyber Mount Guest House on
the corner on your left.

Cyclists and train travellers
We like you best of all as guests! From the train station, there are taxis nearby. Otherwise if you feel like walking for 10 minutes, follow the pavement along the riverside (towards the harbour mouth), winding up Khyber Pass and you’ll find us on its last commanding corner.
Route planner Google Maps isn't quite right but click this and zoom in. We are on East Crescent. Either drive up Cliff Street or come the pretty way along Pier Road and Khyber Pass. Use Google Maps for large scale navigation but then plan your route for the last 5 minutes of your journey. Alternatively perhaps your SatNav gets it right, enter YO21 3HD.
